Children are at the beginning of their path in life and it’s important to have them checked. We often forget that children have the same spine and nervous system as adults. What's more, is that these spines and nerve systems are still developing. Kid's that start healthy are more likely to stay healthy.
The nervous system is the master controller of our body and your spine protects and is the conduit for your spinal cord and associated spinal nerves. If your spine isn't moving correctly, it can disturb the communication between your body and brain (the technical term is a Vertebral Subluxation Complex, 'VSC' or subluxation for short). This altered communication for babies and children may express as endless crying, difficulty to suckle and breastfeed (or favours one side), poor sleep, developmental delays, digestion issues, breathing challenges, behavioural problems, low energy, inability to concentrate, headaches, etc – the list keeps going. In fact, regardless of what the end result or symptom may be, all roads to ‘optimal health’ lead back to the body’s ability to self-regulate and function at a peak level.
The spine is developing rapidly in the first 10 years of life. It is highly affected by the falls and injuries common in those years (including pregnancy and birth) and the repetitive movements that occur the following eight years (backpacks, increased computer usage and poor posture). Like dentistry, many parents see the benefits of providing preventative care for their children and see this as an important role in their child's overall health and wellness.
Absolutely not! We always use safe and gentle techniques adapted for babies or children.
There is no minimum age for a child to have their first check-up or adjustment. We recommend that children get checked as early as possible. As babies grow they begin to crawl, sit and walk by using their spine. Chiropractic is safe for children and only very gentle and specific techniques are used.
